Gabardine

gabardine
- 1904, earlier gaberdine "long, coarse outer garment," 1594, from Sp. gabardina, from gabбn "overcoat" and tabardina "coarse coat," of uncertain origin; infl. by M.Fr. galverdine, which is perhaps from M.H.G. wallevart "pilgrimage," in the sense of "pilgrim's cloak."
